When hot water runs out early, turns lukewarm or stops altogether, the cause is usually a specific part rather than the whole tank. We test the components that commonly fail, repair what makes sense, and tell you directly when a tank is not worth fixing.
The causeWhy it happens
Gas water heaters most often lose hot water because the thermocouple or flame sensor fails, the pilot will not stay lit, or the gas control valve wears out. Electric units usually lose an element or a thermostat. Rumbling and popping come from sediment on the tank bottom. Leaks can come from a fitting, the relief valve or the drain valve, all repairable, or from the tank itself, which is not.
DiagnosisWhat we check first
- 01Pilot, burner and flame sensor
- On gas units we inspect the flame, clean the burner and test the safety components.
- 02Elements and thermostats
- On electric units we meter each element and thermostat to find the failed part.
- 03Relief valve
- A dripping relief valve can mean the valve is worn or the system pressure is too high. We find out which.
- 04Leak source
- Fittings and valves are repairable. A leak from the tank body means replacement.
The optionsWhich repair fits, and when
We lay out the choices plainly, explain what each involves and leave the decision with you.
Component repair
A thermocouple, element, thermostat, igniter or gas valve has failed on a tank that is otherwise sound.
Flush and service
Sediment is causing noise and reduced capacity. Flushing restores some performance and extends tank life.
Replacement recommendation
The tank is leaking or repairs would approach the cost of a new heater. We explain the options plainly.
Local conditionsWater Heater Repair on the west side of San Antonio
Sediment is the most common water heater complaint we see around the Culebra corridor. Hard water drops minerals as it heats, and a tank that has never been flushed can have a thick layer of scale at the bottom. That layer makes the burner work harder and causes the popping sound many people notice.

A few things that help
Note whether you have no hot water at all, or some that runs out quickly. For a gas unit, check whether the pilot is lit if you can see it safely. If the tank is leaking, shut off the cold supply valve at the top.
QuestionsCommon questions about water heater repair
Why does my water heater make popping noises?
Sediment on the tank bottom traps water that boils under the scale layer. Flushing helps, though heavy buildup sometimes means the tank is near the end.
Is a leaking relief valve dangerous?
The valve is doing its job by releasing pressure. Find out why. It may be worn, or pressure in the system may be too high.
Can you repair a tank that leaks from the bottom?
If water is coming from the tank body, no. That means the inner tank has corroded through and needs replacement.
