Replacing a tank water heater is more than unhooking the old one and connecting the new. Venting, gas or electrical supply, the relief valve and its discharge, the drain pan and the expansion tank all have to be right, and in San Antonio a garage install also has to be set up off the floor where required.
The causeWhy it happens
Tank heaters fail in one of two ways. Most commonly, sediment and corrosion eat through the inner tank and it begins to leak from the bottom, which cannot be repaired. Less commonly, the burner, element or controls fail on an older tank, and replacement makes more sense than another repair. People also upgrade to larger tanks when a household grows, or to high-efficiency models to reduce energy use.
DiagnosisWhat we check first
- 01Fuel and capacity
- We match gas or electric and size the tank to your household's real hot water use.
- 02Venting
- Gas heaters need correct flue size, pitch and clearances. We check the existing vent and correct it if needed.
- 03Relief valve discharge
- The temperature and pressure relief line must run to an approved location. Many older installs do not meet this.
- 04Expansion tank and pan
- Homes with a pressure regulator or check valve need an expansion tank. A drain pan protects floors and ceilings.
The optionsWhich repair fits, and when
We lay out the choices plainly, explain what each involves and leave the decision with you.
Same-size replacement
The old tank failed and the space, fuel and venting suit a direct replacement.
Upsize or change location
More hot water is needed, or the heater is moving to a better spot, which may require new piping and venting.
Switch to tankless
You want endless hot water and wall space instead of a tank. See our tankless page for what that involves.
Local conditionsWater Heater Installation on the west side of San Antonio
Hard water from the Edwards Aquifer drops calcium sediment into the bottom of every tank in San Antonio. That layer insulates the water from the burner and shortens tank life. We flush the new tank, set it up so it can be drained easily, and replacing a water heater here typically requires a permit through the City of San Antonio Development Services Department.

A few things that help
Clear a path to the water heater and a few feet around it. If the old tank is leaking, turn off the cold supply valve at the top, and for a gas unit, set the control to pilot or off.
QuestionsCommon questions about water heater installation
How do I know if my tank needs replacing?
Water pooling under the tank, rusty hot water, rumbling noises and inconsistent temperature are common signs. A leak from the tank body means it is time.
What size should I get?
It depends on the number of bathrooms, people and simultaneous uses. We talk through how you use hot water and recommend a capacity.
Do you remove the old water heater?
Yes. We drain it, disconnect it and haul it away.
