When a disposal hums, stops or leaks, the fix is often simpler than people expect. A jam can be freed in minutes. A tripped overload can be reset. A drip at a connection can be tightened or resealed. The goal is to tell the difference between a repairable fault and a worn-out unit.
The causeWhy it happens
Disposals jam when something hard, such as a fruit pit, bone or utensil, wedges between the turntable and the grind ring. The motor hums but cannot turn, and the overload protector trips to save it. Slow draining comes from fibrous or starchy waste packed in the trap or drain line. Leaks happen at the sink flange, the dishwasher inlet or the discharge tube, and less fixably, from the housing bottom when the internal seals give out.
DiagnosisWhat we check first
- 01Jam and overload
- We free the turntable from below with a hex wrench and reset the overload, then test it under water.
- 02Leak location
- A dry paper towel run around each joint shows whether the leak is at the flange, an inlet or the housing.
- 03Drain line beyond the unit
- If the disposal spins but water backs up, the clog is downstream in the trap or wall line.
- 04Electrical
- No hum at all means we check the switch, outlet and reset button before condemning the motor.
The optionsWhich repair fits, and when
We lay out the choices plainly, explain what each involves and leave the decision with you.
Free the jam and reset
Motor hums but will not spin. Most units return to normal once the obstruction is removed.
Reseal connections
Leak at the sink flange or drain joints. New putty or gaskets and correct tightening stop it.
Replace the unit
Housing leak, failed motor or a grinding chamber worn through. We install a new disposal that fits your sink.
Local conditionsGarbage Disposal Repair on the west side of San Antonio
Kitchen drains in San Antonio homes take a lot of grease, particularly after holiday cooking. A disposal grinds food, but grease still cools and coats the line downstream. Running plenty of cold water while the unit runs and keeping fats out of the sink makes a big difference to how long both the disposal and the drain last.

A few things that help
Unplug the disposal or turn off its switch before reaching into the sink. Do not pour chemical drain opener into a disposal, as it can damage seals and is unsafe for us to work around.
QuestionsCommon questions about garbage disposal repair
My disposal just hums. Is it broken?
Usually it is jammed. We free the turntable, reset the overload and test it. If it still hums, the motor may be failing.
What should never go in a disposal?
Grease, bones, fruit pits, coffee grounds in quantity, pasta, rice and fibrous scraps like celery and corn husks.
How long do disposals typically last?
That varies with use and model. When a unit starts leaking from the housing, it has reached the end of its life.
